English system for poor relief, established
by the Poor Relief Act 1601. Each parish was
responsible for its own poor, paid for by a
parish tax. Relief today is provided by
national social security benefits. Poor law
was reformed in the 19th century, parish
functions being transferred to the Poor Law
Commissioners 1834 and eventually to the
Ministry of Health 1914. It is now superseded
by rights to benefit payments, administered
by the Department of Social Security.
